Common Flange Types and Their Application

types of flanges

What is Flange

A flange is a projecting rim or edge that is commonly found on pipes or shafts. Its primary function is to serve as a connection point, reinforce another object, or provide support and strength to the attachment point. In the context of piping systems, a flange is a protruding collar, rim, or rib on an object, usually a pipe, designed to provide mechanical support, facilitate assembly, and allow for the attachment of other components such as valves, fittings, or other pipes. Flanges are often welded or bolted onto the pipe and come in various shapes, sizes, and designs to suit different applications and operational requirements. They play a critical role in piping systems by enabling the efficient assembly, disassembly, and maintenance of pipelines. They also ensure a secure and leak-proof connection between different sections of pipes or pipe components.

Here are some examples.

Types of Flanges

1. Weld Neck Flange: The Weld Neck Flange features a long, tapered hub designed for welding to the pipe, ensuring a strong and permanent connection. Its robust construction and secure weld make it ideal for high-pressure and high-temperature applications where reliability and structural integrity are paramount.

2. Slip-On Flange: The Slip-On Flange slides over the pipe and is welded in place, providing a cost-effective and easy-to-install solution for low-pressure piping systems. Its simple design and lack of a tapered bore make it suitable for applications where alignment ease and minimal pressure drop are priorities.

3. Socket Weld Flange: The Socket Weld Flange is welded to the outer side of smaller pipes, offering a strong and leak-resistant connection. Its compact design makes it suitable for applications where space is limited, such as in small diameter piping systems or in areas with restricted access.

4. Lap Joint Flange: The Lap Joint Flange is used with stub ends for applications requiring frequent dismantling, facilitating easy alignment and disassembly. It provides a low-cost solution for connecting pipes or fittings that need to be easily aligned or adjusted without the need for welding.

5. Threaded Flange: Has internal threads to match the pipe's external threads, allowing for easy assembly and disassembly.

6. Blind Flange: The Blind Flange is utilized to close the end of a pipe system, typically with bolts, providing a solid seal to prevent leakage. Its blank design allows for easy isolation of sections of a pipeline during maintenance or testing operations.

7. Orifice Flange: The Orifice Flange is specifically designed for use in orifice metering systems to measure flow rates accurately. It features a precision-drilled orifice plate installed between two flanges, allowing for precise control and measurement of fluid flow in pipelines.

8. Spectacle Blind Flange: Used in pipelines where maintenance or inspection is required, with a solid section and a hole section.

9. Expander Flange: The Expander Flange is employed to gradually increase the pipe size, facilitating smooth flow transitions in piping systems. Its tapered design enables seamless expansion while maintaining structural integrity, ideal for applications requiring controlled pipe diameter adjustments.

10. Reducing Flange: The Reducing Flange connects pipes of different sizes, facilitating smooth transitions between piping systems with varying diameters. Its design eliminates the need for additional pipe fittings, providing a compact and cost-effective solution for joining pipes of unequal sizes.

11. Long neck Flange: The Long Neck Flange, also known as the Extended Weld Neck Flange, features an elongated neck that provides additional space between the flange face and bolt holes. This design accommodates insulation thickness or isolates the flange from the pipe, commonly used in applications where thermal insulation or electrical insulation is required.

12: Puddle Flange: A Puddle Flange is a specialized type of flange used to prevent water ingress through the annular space around pipes passing through concrete structures, such as walls or floors. It typically consists of a circular plate with a central opening that matches the pipe diameter, along with a gasket or sealing material. The flange is welded or bolted onto the pipe and then embedded or mounted onto the concrete structure, forming a watertight seal and preventing the accumulation of water around the pipe penetration. Puddle flanges are commonly used in construction projects, particularly in underground infrastructure, basements, tunnels, and sewage treatment plants, to ensure waterproofing and protect against water damage.
